A good competency profile includes about 10 competencies. Technical competencies can be added.
To draw up a competency profile for a job within your organization, you can select the essential competencies from a lexicon as the one in EVO.K.E.
There are a number of different methods you can use to determine the essential competencies for a position. You can:
- Ask the manager and/or the incumbents to select a certain number of competencies from a list (lexicon);
- Meet with the incumbents and/or supervisors of the position, individually or in group. You can use cards, each card describes a competency from the lexicon and provides a definition. Alone or in a group, categorize them (essential, important, unimportant) according to importance for the position. At the end of the process, only the competencies that were categorized as essential make up the competency profile. This interactive method is particularly useful, as it involves numerous people and encourages discussion;
- Combine the above methods for multiple sources of information.
